Day 8 : Hiking and Chinese Takeout

We finally got a day to sleep in and this was our nicest hotel room yet. It had by far the most comfortable bed. We ate a late breakfast and, by the time we started getting ready to leave the room, it was about time to start thinking about what to do for lunch. However, we had some hiking to do.

The Old Man of Storr is a huge rock on top of a hill on the northern part of the Isle of Skye. It was only about a terrifying 15 minute drive from our hotel. The hike was easy, but long. The view was amazing. Getting up to the old man wasn’t too bad. Getting back down was a bit of a scramble. It was steep, and there was a lot of loose rock. We were there for 2 or 3 hours before we decided to hunt for some cliff sides.

After another 15 minutes of less horrible, but still stressful, driving we made it to Lealt falls. We noticed a lot of the water is brown here compared to Iceland or Canada. We assumed it’s because it’s less glacial water, and more groundwater and rainfall. Kilt Rock & Mealt cliffs were just a bit further down the road. A good portion of our time there was spent squinting into the ocean looking for dolphins or whales. Kaylea actually did manage to spot a small pod of dolphins WAY out in the ocean. Aaron saw them too after 5 minutes of not believing her. Eventually, other tourists saw them as well. Everyone was very impressed with Kaylea’s eyesight. Lasik surgery will do that to you.

We ended the day back in Portree looking for food. It’s a big island, but all of the tourists go to this tiny town, so food options were limited. Everything was booked, so we ended up eating some greasy fish and chips on a dock next to a capsized boat and some aggressive seagulls. That didn’t quite hit the spot, so an hour or so later we threw the dice on some Scottish Chinese takeout. It was worth the risk.

Day 9 & 10: Ice Ice Baby

Get ready for a two-dayer! Day 9: Like every other blog post before this one, we woke up. The breakfast at Fosshotel wasn't very substantial, and the options were pretty limited. The continental breakfast was a few slices of cheese, meat, and cucumbers. Kaylea had some lackluster pancakes. We had a glacier hike to get to, so we ate as much as we could. After that, we spent a little time working on the blog and getting ready before we made our way out. We put on all of our thermal gear, and a bunch of layers, and hit the road.   We were only about 20 minutes away, but 20 minutes in snow gear in the car gets pretty hot. We pulled up to the meeting spot for our tour, and our guide was just wearing a long sleeve shirt. We got out and asked how cold it's going to be on the glacier, and she said "It's like this. Maybe just bring a light jacket." So we had to take off a bunch of layers in the parking lot. We met some of our fellow tourists, and hopped in a van to head to...

Day 39 Vatican City

We decided to wake up early this morning and make our way to the Vatican: Home to the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica. Since it's famous for it's long lines and wait times, we wanted to make sure we got there super early. We planned on waking up around 7:30, getting ready, making some sandwiches, and riding the metro to the holy city. We managed to do all of that except wake up early. We woke up late, but we had read online that there was usually a lull around lunch time. So, we decided to hit up the Vatican shortly after 1. The metro ride was the most crowded either of us had ever experienced. We've never been touching that many people at the same time. Like everyone on that train, we felt a little violated, but it was good training for the swarms of people we were about to have to deal with. We arrived at the outer wall of the Vatican and saw the line. It looked massive, but we weren't too disappointed. We had mentally prepared for the lines, and on the ...
