Day 11 : Last Night in Edinburgh

We woke up early (for us) and walked 25 minutes to Edinburgh Castle. Unfortunately, the tickets to tour the castle were sold out. Apparently, we were supposed to have booked several days in advance. Who knew? We’ll hit it next time. That was our big plan for the day, so we had to improvise. We made our way down the street to St Giles Cathedral to take some pictures. We’d been in Europe for almost 2 weeks, and still hadn’t gone into any big old cathedrals. We picked a good one.

We stopped in a small shop for some coffee and pastries. There was a book exchange with a strange looking book called Bored of the Rings. It’s a Lord of the Rings parody. They let us take it because Kaylea couldn’t get through reading the summary without laughing. After that, we went into a few shops to look for some souvenirs. We weren’t looking too hard. There just really wasn’t a lot more to do than shop since our plans had been thrown off.

It was around this time that Aaron realized that we hadn’t received an email to check in for our flight the next day. Aaron paced back and forth inside a small clothing store trying to get checked in on his phone. There was an alert that our flights could be impacted by cancellations or delays, and one of the flights was showing up red, but there was no other information. We started getting nervous, but we still had time to figure it out. We decided to go to an art museum around the corner before we head back to the hotel to see if we could get everything sorted out.

On the way to the art museum, Kaylea spotted a place called The Edinburgh Dungeon. The man at the counter described it as a cross between a fun house and a historical tour. We decided to check it out. It was definitely more of a fun house. It was a lot of actors with thick and  surprisingly terrible Scottish accents talking about witch trials, the plague, torture, murder, and general dark things from Scottland’s history. It was pretty fun! Kaylea was forced to dance by one of the actors at the beginning of the whole thing, but the actors ended up heckling almost everyone, so it was pretty funny. The experience ended with a ride at the “gallows” where all the seats drop about 40 feet.

The dungeon lasted a little longer than we expected, but we made our way back to see if we could figure out our next flights. Aaron spent about an hour between his laptop, his phone, and sitting on hold before realizing that they just weren’t going to let us check in online. We had to show up for our flight a little earlier than we would have normally. So, instead of having to leave at 7am, we were going to have to leave at 6:30. By this time it was already starting to get close to dinner, and we were pretty tired from walking around over the past few days. We decided to take our last night in Edinburgh a bit easy. We caught up on the blog. We ordered room service. We watched some Stranger Things, and we prepared ourselves for the 18-19 hour travel journey we had ahead of ourselves.

Day 39 Vatican City

We decided to wake up early this morning and make our way to the Vatican: Home to the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica. Since it's famous for it's long lines and wait times, we wanted to make sure we got there super early. We planned on waking up around 7:30, getting ready, making some sandwiches, and riding the metro to the holy city. We managed to do all of that except wake up early. We woke up late, but we had read online that there was usually a lull around lunch time. So, we decided to hit up the Vatican shortly after 1. The metro ride was the most crowded either of us had ever experienced. We've never been touching that many people at the same time. Like everyone on that train, we felt a little violated, but it was good training for the swarms of people we were about to have to deal with. We arrived at the outer wall of the Vatican and saw the line. It looked massive, but we weren't too disappointed. We had mentally prepared for the lines, and on the ...

Day 55, 56, 57 The Arch and Deep Water Soloing

We had lots to do on day 55, and we needed to get out of the hotel early in order to get everything done. By 1:30 pm, we were ready to go. Our parking garage was crowded and confusing. Aaron had to do a crazy 9 point turn with Kaylea standing outside of the car to guide him out of the tiny tiny parking space. With only an inch to spare, we managed to get out of the space. But it wasn't over. It took us several U-turns and a lot of frustration to get out of the garage. All in all, it probably took us 15-20 minutes to get the car out of there. Once we were on the highway, everything was fine. Well, kind of. Aaron couldn't read the street signs, or any of the indicators inside the car. Other than that, everything was fine... Can you see the concentration/fear in his eyes? Our first stop for the day was Cuevas del Drach (Dragon Caves). It's a small system of caves and it's one of the "must see" things on the island. Other than that, we didn't really kno...

Days 37 & 38: Ryanair sucks and When in Rome, its Hot has Hell

Ciao! We made it to Italy! But of course, not without incident. Remember our early morning train? Well it randomly stopped 6 stops too early. Then it shut down. We spent about two minutes panicking, 5 minutes looking for a connecting train, and 30 minutes waiting for it. Not to worry. We still made it to the airport extremely early. But Ryanair sucks, so we were 't relieved. The whole check in, baggage check, and re-check in process was disorganized and confusing. We made it though. After the longest bus ride ever (traffic here is asinine) and a hot subway ride, we made it to our hostel. We were not out of the woods yet. The hostel is okay, but the main receptionist is the worst. First we had to wait 20 minutes to check in while she printed flyers, then she refused to charge Kaylea's credit card stating "It would be better for us if you paid in cash". Aaron had to walk a few blocks in the heat to find an ATM. It was out of order. When he returned, the woman begrud...
