Day 10 : From Inverness to Edinburgh

We woke up and had a nice breakfast before heading out to see Inverness. There wasn’t a whole lot to see in the city center besides some shopping, so we mostly just wandered around looking at the old buildings. We took a stroll next to the river and stopped to read the monuments along the way. There are A LOT of monuments all over the country. Many of them are monuments to foreigners who assisted Scotland in some way, but most seem to pay tribute to military heroes. After about an hour of exploring, we headed back to the car to be on our way.

Our first stop for the day was a museum at the battlefield of Culloden, which was only a few minutes from the city center. We spent a few hours reading about the history through a timeline-of-events exhibit before walking around the actual battlefield. Once again, we were faced with the fact that we really don’t know a lot about Scottish history, but it was still a fascinating exhibit.

After Culloden, we had to drive to Edinburgh. Finally, Aaron had a nice relaxing drive. Granted, it was over 3 hours long, but there were 2 lanes on several parts of it. We were low on gas for the first 2 hours, and gas stations only seemed to pop up every hundred miles. So, Aaron had that to freak out about for a while, but it was still the best drive of the trip.

Our last hotel was described as an “intimate boutique hotel”. We took that to mean “tiny”. It had been a long day of driving, the parking was questionable, and it was a struggle to get our bags through the narrow labyrinth of our hotel hallways. The last thing we wanted was an “intimate” hotel room. Thankfully, we opened the doors to one of the nicest hotel rooms we’ve been in! High ceilings with a large bay window and fantastic view. An incredibly pleasant surprise.

We got some dinner and spent the rest of the night wandering around Edinburgh. It’s a beautiful old city with incredible architecture. We ended up walking about 6 miles while exploring until we realized that, though it was still light outside, it was already 10 PM. We were a little disappointed we didn’t get to spend more time here, but we took in as much as we could. This was our last stop before we head home.

Day 9 & 10: Ice Ice Baby

Get ready for a two-dayer! Day 9: Like every other blog post before this one, we woke up. The breakfast at Fosshotel wasn't very substantial, and the options were pretty limited. The continental breakfast was a few slices of cheese, meat, and cucumbers. Kaylea had some lackluster pancakes. We had a glacier hike to get to, so we ate as much as we could. After that, we spent a little time working on the blog and getting ready before we made our way out. We put on all of our thermal gear, and a bunch of layers, and hit the road.   We were only about 20 minutes away, but 20 minutes in snow gear in the car gets pretty hot. We pulled up to the meeting spot for our tour, and our guide was just wearing a long sleeve shirt. We got out and asked how cold it's going to be on the glacier, and she said "It's like this. Maybe just bring a light jacket." So we had to take off a bunch of layers in the parking lot. We met some of our fellow tourists, and hopped in a van to head to...

Day 7: Over the Sea to Skye!

Wednesday we woke up VERY early only to realize that we had mapped to the wrong Mallaig and only needed 1.5 hours to travel northwest, not 2.5 southeast. We dragged a bit but still hit the road by 9:45.  There weren’t too many stops on the way, but we did pull into the carpark at the Glenfinnan Viaduct. That’s the famous bridge from the Harry Potter movies. You know, the one that Harry takes to Hogwarts. C’mon guys, know your nerd trivia. Anyways, it cost money to park, it was raining, and we had a ferry to catch so we did not hike up to it. It looked neat though.  We made it to the ferry a little early and caught the 12:00 on standby. The harbor crossing looked a lot like the harbor in Husavik. It was a pleasant crossing with nice views, except every time you looked in the center and saw the giant tour bus tilting back and forth, you’d want to throw up. Once back in the car, it was an hour drive up to Portree in the northern part of the Isle. We had some lunch at a small cafe...
