Day 49 & 50 Aquarium and nasty Thai Food

Day 49 started out with a lousy breakfast. All that was available were half-peeled bananas, some gross cereal, and few small pieces of bread and jam for some toast. The juice was OK, but man cannot live on juice alone. We ate what we could and got ourselves ready for the day. Then, all of a sudden, a few hours had gone by. We were still in bed. Kaylea was at a good part in her book, and Aaron had found a cool book the day before. So, we were stuck in bed reading.  (Into Thin Air and The Martian! Check em out!) It was already lunchtime. We had seen an aquarium the night before while we were walking around. We decided to get a quick bite to eat then head to the aquarium. It was only a 5 min walk from the hostel.

The aquarium was great! Well... we got ripped off while standing in the line, but only a little. A very friendly African man sold us some crap for "donations" to Africa. He gave us some stringy bracelet things, a small wooden elephant, and a small wooden turtle, and we gave him some coins. We're not really sure how much, but it was less than 5 euros. We later saw these same trinkets in a shop for 1 euro. No big deal, but we've decided not to let anyone hand us anything for the rest of the trip. TRUST NO ONE!

Other than that, the aquarium was great! Eels, seals, dolphins, and penguins. This place had it all. Kaylea touched a sting ray. We had to wait forever, and she may have irrevocably damaged the tank with hand sanitizer, but she touched it! All in all, we were at the aquarium for 3 to 4 hours. Afterwards, we wanted to find a movie theater to watch the new Jurassic World movie. We finally found one, but they weren't showing anything in English. It was around 5 o'clock, and we were starting to get hungry anyway. Eating really takes up a lot of your time when you're traveling. We found a Thai place online, and it was going to be about a 15-20 minute walk. We started to head there, when Kaylea noticed her foot was hurting a little.

We sat to rest Kaylea's foot for a little bit. We've got some climbing trips coming up, and we didn't want to do anything to injure it. For those of you who don't know, Kaylea messed up her ankle about a year ago while climbing, and it still swells a bit when she walks around. At the moment, it was the size of a baseball. After a bit of rest, she tried to stand, but couldn't put weight on it. Her foot had completely stopped working. Thai food was out. The 5 minute walk back to the hostel was going to be hard enough. Kaylea refused to let Aaron give her a piggy back ride back to the hostel. After a bit of time, she realized if she walked on the side of her foot, it didn't hurt too bad. We hobbled back to the hostel to get her off of her feet. We spent the rest of the night stuck in the hostel. We had some good books, so it wasn't too bad.

Day 50
By morning, Kaylea's foot seemed to be in working order. It was working well enough anyway. We decided to keep it wrapped as much as possible for the rest of the trip. It should be fine, but we'll have to keep an eye on it as we go. Since the hostel's breakfast was so terrible, we went out. It was about a 15 minute walk, and Kaylea was walking pretty normally with the wrap.

Breakfast was fantastic, and afterward we decided to try to find another movie theater. According to google, we were 4 minutes from the nearest one. We started walking around, but we couldn't find it. We spent 10 minutes walking around the same city block with no luck. Finally, we walked into a library and asked if the librarian knew where the cinema was. When we showed her the theater on Aaron's phone and she gave us a strange smile and showed us the way. We finally found it, but it looked small and odd. Aaron walked in to ask the woman behind the front desk if they were showing Jurassic World, but there was something odd about this theater. Maybe it was the size, or the fact that there were porn DVD's displayed on a shelf, but something was definitely off.
Aaron: "Do you speak English?"
Woman: "Yes."
Aaron: "Is this a movie theater?"
Woman: "Yes. Sexy show"
Aaron: "NOPE! Sorry! Wrong Theater!"

We scurried away. That poor librarian must have thought we were a couple of young American perverts who had lost their way. Oh well.

After all that work, we couldn't find a movie theater showing an English version of Jurassic World. Kaylea's foot seemed to be in working order, so we were going to give the Thai place another shot. It didn't open until 7, so we went back to the hostel to print out some boarding passes and watch laptop movies.

Around 7, we headed there. It turned out to be the worst dining experience we've had on the trip. The buffet in Florence was way better than this place. Even if you look past the terrible service, the food tasted days old. I mean how do you mess up spring rolls? Anyway, we both ordered green curry with chicken. They brought out a bowl of grey, slimy, snot-like, gravy. After a few bites, we asked for the check. We were no longer hungry. When we looked closer at the reviews on TripAdviser, their were several that matched our experience. Either somebody gamed the system, or Italians don't know what good Thai food tastes like. Kaylea wrote a lengthy review when we got back to the hostel. 1 star!

Day 9 & 10: Ice Ice Baby

Get ready for a two-dayer! Day 9: Like every other blog post before this one, we woke up. The breakfast at Fosshotel wasn't very substantial, and the options were pretty limited. The continental breakfast was a few slices of cheese, meat, and cucumbers. Kaylea had some lackluster pancakes. We had a glacier hike to get to, so we ate as much as we could. After that, we spent a little time working on the blog and getting ready before we made our way out. We put on all of our thermal gear, and a bunch of layers, and hit the road.   We were only about 20 minutes away, but 20 minutes in snow gear in the car gets pretty hot. We pulled up to the meeting spot for our tour, and our guide was just wearing a long sleeve shirt. We got out and asked how cold it's going to be on the glacier, and she said "It's like this. Maybe just bring a light jacket." So we had to take off a bunch of layers in the parking lot. We met some of our fellow tourists, and hopped in a van to head to

Day 4 - Nations Divided by A Common Language

We got a pretty late start this morning. We had a lot planned for the day, but nothing was too time sensitive, so we got some much needed rest. However, it wasn't the best sleep of all time. The walls here are paper thin, and people were constantly letting this door right outside our room slam shut. Also, Aaron smacked his head on the bunk bed during the night but has no recollection of it.  Once we got up and going, the hostel was pretty much empty. Or rather, empty of kids, and filled with the cleaning crew, who didn't seem to like us being there. After they wouldn't let us into the kitchen to fill up our water bottles, it dawned on us that we're having a little bit of trouble communicating. First thing we did was head to the Tower of London. We didn't get to go inside the first time we visited, so we decided to go back. It was a pretty great museum (K - "meh"). It started to get really crowded towards the end, and the line to see the crown jewels wa
