Birthagraduversary: Day 1

WE'RE BACK.

After two years we've decided to pick the blog back up for our latest trip! We've been on a few small trips since our two month Euro trip, including our wedding in Yosemite! (Check out Kaylea's pinterest for pictures) That trip was such a whirlwind that we didn't have time to blog. Just a summary: We drove from Dallas to Yosemite, married at Tenaya Lodge, honeymooned in Yosemite with climbing and hiking adventures, drove to Zion and hiked the narrows, drove to the Grand Canyon to sight see, and then back home to Dallas.

Now that you've been caught up since last we blogged - our current trip is dun, dada, dun: BIRTHA-GRADUH-VERSARY.

Basically, Kaylea graduated with her Masters on May 13th, turned 25 on May 15th, and our 1 year anniversary is May 21st. So we decided to wander across the southern states in search of fun, adventure, and romance (trill the r).

We just arrived at our hotel in New Orleans, where we will be staying for 5 nights. Aaron has never been here before, and we've got big plans for this city. We left Addison around 2 pm, after a last minute packing session. The crazy graduation and birthday weekend prior didn't leave much time to prep, so we did it all this morning! On the way out we grabbed some energy drinks and snacks so we wouldn't fall prey to gas station junk food. It worked for the most part.

The drive was as you'd expect, long and mostly boring. We listened to a Mike Berbiglia bit for a while, talked a lot, napped a little, and played the license plate game. Once we hit Louisiana, Kaylea was on the look out for gaters. Since we drove through I-49 most of the way, we didn't get to see much swamp lands like we would have if we'd gone farther south to I-10. No worries though, we're planning to take a swamp tour while we're here.

New Orleans has been interesting so far, lots of people randomly walking in the middle of main roads disregarding traffic, and it took about 5 minutes to get through Bourbon Street via car. It was so crowed for a Tuesday night! Our hotel is pretty swanky. Kaylea thinks she stayed here when she visited with her family 3 years ago. Parking is also insane! Street parking is tight, which means valet is expensive, but its virtually the only option unless you want to park 10 blocks away. Our hotel room is tiny, but we have a beautiful view of the courtyard and city.

Needless to say, we're pretty excited about this trip. Aaron has been humming "When the Saints Go Marching In" pretty much all day.  We'll try to keep up with the blog as best we can, but there won't be as many posts since this trip is much shorter than last time.

Tomorrow, we explore.

Day 9 & 10: Ice Ice Baby

Get ready for a two-dayer! Day 9: Like every other blog post before this one, we woke up. The breakfast at Fosshotel wasn't very substantial, and the options were pretty limited. The continental breakfast was a few slices of cheese, meat, and cucumbers. Kaylea had some lackluster pancakes. We had a glacier hike to get to, so we ate as much as we could. After that, we spent a little time working on the blog and getting ready before we made our way out. We put on all of our thermal gear, and a bunch of layers, and hit the road.   We were only about 20 minutes away, but 20 minutes in snow gear in the car gets pretty hot. We pulled up to the meeting spot for our tour, and our guide was just wearing a long sleeve shirt. We got out and asked how cold it's going to be on the glacier, and she said "It's like this. Maybe just bring a light jacket." So we had to take off a bunch of layers in the parking lot. We met some of our fellow tourists, and hopped in a van to head to...

Day 7: Over the Sea to Skye!

Wednesday we woke up VERY early only to realize that we had mapped to the wrong Mallaig and only needed 1.5 hours to travel northwest, not 2.5 southeast. We dragged a bit but still hit the road by 9:45.  There weren’t too many stops on the way, but we did pull into the carpark at the Glenfinnan Viaduct. That’s the famous bridge from the Harry Potter movies. You know, the one that Harry takes to Hogwarts. C’mon guys, know your nerd trivia. Anyways, it cost money to park, it was raining, and we had a ferry to catch so we did not hike up to it. It looked neat though.  We made it to the ferry a little early and caught the 12:00 on standby. The harbor crossing looked a lot like the harbor in Husavik. It was a pleasant crossing with nice views, except every time you looked in the center and saw the giant tour bus tilting back and forth, you’d want to throw up. Once back in the car, it was an hour drive up to Portree in the northern part of the Isle. We had some lunch at a small cafe...
